Reduce Caregiver Burnout

with Connecticut In-Home Assistance

Providing care to a loved one is a noble cause. However, doing it alone is a team effort and requires the help of multiple people to do effectively.

Respite care services from Connecticut In-Home Assistance have you covered and ensure that your loved one gets the quality care and attention that they need while you need to step away for a little bit.

Remember, this is a team effort and we’re on your side.

What is Respite Care?

The goal of respite care is to prevent the negative effects of caregiver burnout while still ensuring that the care recipient is still receiving the high quality care that they need.

Respite care is intended to provide the exact same level of care for a loved one while simultaneously relieving the primary caregiver of their duties for a short period of time.

Respite care is entirely customizable and can range anywhere from a few hours to several days or even a couple of weeks. Even families that do not fully replace their primary caregiver still utilize respite care at recurring time intervals on a regular basis.

A properly designed care plan should always include a routine for respite care.

Respite Care services are shown to reduce caregiver burnout, and are available through Connecticut In-Home Assistance
Respite Care at Connecticut In-Home Assistance is provided through our experienced team of caregivers.

How Long Does It Last?

There is no set requirement of time for how long a respite care session lasts, or how often a respite session needs to occur.

Respite care is 100% customizable and depends entirely on the needs of both, the loved one and the primary caregiver.

Families have utilized respite care anywhere from a couple hours a week to large time spans of several weeks.

Some families only need short-term relief whereas others need longer time stretches of respite care while they handle other life matters. Some families schedule their respite care sessions many weeks ahead of time, and others have scheduled them one day before due to an unforeseen emergency or change of plans. Respite care can be utilized at recurring intervals, and can happen with many changes and adjustments to schedules over many years.

Respite care is intended to accommodate what you need and fit into your schedule. Talk to us about your situation and how you need us to fit into it.

Why Is It Important?

Caring for a loved one is a noble cause, but it is not meant to be done alone. It is a team effort, and having break periods for the primary caregiver is a requirement.

What to Expect

Respite Care services are intended to provide assistance to both, the care recipient as well as the primary caregiver

Prior to your first respite care session with Connecticut In-Home Assistance, a care plan will be developed between the primary caregiver and our respite caregiver to determine what kind of care is needed for the loved one, what the routines and expectations are, and communication preferences.

Having an emergency plan in place is a key part of developing a thorough care plan during the initial assessments. This emergency plan will include the appropriate list of contacts to notify, specific care instructions, when to call 911, and other important medical requirements that are needed.

Please note: Regardless of the agency you go with, medical services are not included and can only be done legally by medically authorized personnel; however, we are more than happy to help alongside any medically authorized personnel your loved one currently has.

The first few respite care sessions are normally used as an adjustment phase for the respite caregiver to learn the routines and care duties that are expected, develop a care transition process, and establish rapport with the care recipient and primary caregiver.

It is normal for the primary caregiver to keep a closer eye on the respite caregiver during this phase to ensure that the care is being done properly.

As time goes on with further respite care sessions, once the primary caregiver has seen enough and is comfortable with the performance of the respite caregiver, it is normal for the primary caregiver to allow more autonomy to the respite caregiver and trust them without having to keep as close of an eye on them.

Regular check-ins & communication updates still happen, but the primary caregiver is now able to shift their full focus and attention towards other matters while their loved one is still receiving full care and support from the respite caregiver.

When the respite period is over, the primary caregiver can pick up right where they originally left off with a fully relaxed mind and recharged energy levels, and continue caring for their loved one as usual until the next respite care session.

**Remember - The key to successful respite care is to ensure that the primary caregiver is being replaced by someone you can trust who is qualified and knows what they’re doing.
